Job Description:
Structural Engineer (Industrial)
Responsible, as a design professional, for the production of innovative,
appropriate, and cost-effective designs, drawings, and specifications in
his/her discipline for assigned projects. Maintains professional
registration and signs/seals documents prepared under his/her supervision.


JOB SUMMARY:

Maintains state-of-the-art knowledge in all pertinent aspects of his/her
discipline including design, analysis techniques, products, applicable
codes and construction practices relating to sector projects.
Maintains familiarity with A/E Department discipline specific technical
manuals, standards and procedures.
Contributes to development and maintenance of architectural professional
office standards.
Maintains competence in automated design tools and CADD hardware and
software.
Projects and monitors workload status, including assigned personnel,
advising of difficulties in accomplishing schedules or availability for
additional work.
Participates in the professional community organization and trade
organizations within his/her discipline.
Participates in continuing education to maintain professional status as
required by licensing authorities and to enhance professional skills.
Develops knowledge and increased expertise in selected area of Resource
Specialization.
Assists in development of Engineering Interns, Designers and Technicians
assigned to him/her, by involving them in design process/meetings, field
inspections and providing technical guidance.
Researches and is responsible for engineering design compliance with owner
criteria requirements. Meets with owner’s representatives as required
develop/clarify projects criteria.
Researches, documents and is responsible for engineering design compliance
with all applicable codes, ordinances, standards regulations, covenants
and restrictions.
Participates in project strategy meetings, develop design concepts and
recommends systems within his/her discipline which incorporate solutions
that are innovative, appropriate, cost effective and facilitate ease of
construction using good engineering judgment.
Works with Building Department/Regulatory officials in assuring compliance
with applicable codes.
Produces pricing and proposal presentation documents and outline
specifications, including as required mass models, preliminary design
aids, presentation, color and material sample boards.
Directs technical efforts of Engineering Interns, Designers and
Technicians assigned to the project in his/her discipline.
Plans production and prepares man-hour estimate for project effort for all
work in his/her discipline. Assures adherence to drawing production
strategy.
Monitors production and man-hour efforts for assigned work, advising
supervisor of any difficulties in achieving budgets and schedules, or
priority conflicts.
Assists in engaging and serving as liaison to discipline-related outside
consultants, coordinating information and monitoring efforts/costs.
Is responsible for the production of well-organized, finished drawing of
good appearance, accuracy, clarity and correctness.
Performs dimensional, interference and design checks to minimize
deficiencies, errors and omissions.
Performs interdisciplinary coordination check to minimize deficiencies,
errors and omissions.
Is responsible for preparation, accuracy and completeness of discipline
specifications.
Completes criteria, code compliance coordination checklist. Work with
Quality Assurance to implement their review comments.
Signs and seals engineering documents when assigned as engineer of record.
Maintains ethics and professionalism.
Maintains orderly work file, prepares clear well-written
memos/correspondence.
Assists Project Coordinator by providing required information on timely
basis and keeping them apprised as to progress of the work.
In absence of Project Coordinator or Project Architect/Engineer, assists
Project Principal, when assigned, in functions described in Project
Coordinator’s job description.
Advises and assists Construction Project Managers, Superintendents and
Subcontractors in the interpretation and clarification of construction
documents.
Reviews applicable show drawings and submittal data for compliance with
Construction Documents.
Participates as requested in the Quality Assurance and construction
inspection program to monitor compliance with construction documents.
Prepares inspection reports.
Provides timely solutions to field problems and prepares engineering field
orders, addenda and record drawings.
Participates in post-construction review process.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
Must be a registered P.E. with 5 to 15 years of experience
NCEES registration a plus
Background (or interest) in industrial-type facility design preferred
